I admit it: I'm a total geek. I love electronics, programming, 3D printing, 3D art, and vintage Apple hardware. I'm always juggling half a dozen projects. I also enjoy documenting it all: my successes, my failures, my experiences... and everything geeky along the way.

Geek Extraordinaire. Yeh, I said it.

I picked up Jack Tomalin’s Holiday Nook. I wanted to make a scene with a sexy girl in lingerie having a glass of wine by the fireplace.

The more I played around with it, the more I wanted it to have a few sexy girls dressed in lingerie drinking wine by the fireplace. Something of a sleepover, but with adults.

I dropped in a few more models and dressed them in some sexy lingerie. I gave them all a pose and some expressions so that it looks like they’re all having a good time.

I dropped in some lights and gave it a render.

Oooh! That looks cozy!

I decided to swap Katana out for Victoria. I wasn’t happy with the hair and I couldn’t find a hair style in my library that looked good on an Asian Genesis. The clothes and hair for Genesis on the floor weren’t working for me either, so I swapped those out too.

I wasn’t happy with the wine glasses that I was using either. I was using the ones from Jack Tomalin’s amazing Grandeur Dinner Service, but they’re just a little too gothic for the scene. The look like they belong at a medical banquet, not a sleepover. I want wine glasses, not goblets!

With that, I picked up the Wine Me set.

There’s a few bottle styles as well as a few fill levels to play around with.

I experimented with the Ray Trace settings until I was happy with the transparency.

I then dropped a bottle and cork screw onto the table and moved it into position.

I then placed the glasses in all their hands and repositioned their fingers.

Much better, but the lighting still needs a little more work.

wine by the fireplace render 19

Preliminary renders show that there’s not a lot of detail in the wallpaper. It has a really intricate design, so it would be a shame to lose it due to a low sampling rate. I jammed the occlusion samples up to 128 and the shading rate down to 0.10.

I let it run all day, over night, and through work. After 27 hours, it wasn’t even half way done! At that rate, it’ll take 4 days to render!

27 hours

I dropped the shading rate down to .75. Still, after 16 hours, the progress wasn’t much better.

16 hours

Even though it seems to be hanging, I can already tell there’s a huge improvement in the quality and detail of the wallpaper.

This is such a small portion of the wallpaper, yet there’s so much detail:

But why is it taking so long to render? Is it my bucket size? I had it cranked up to 128. I dropped it to 32 and raised my X and Y pixel samples to 24.

Boom! It rendered in 2.5 hours!!

Wine with Friends 2

I spotted a few problem areas and cleaned them up. I also added a cork to the table next to the bottle of wine. The lipstick on both Victorias was a little dark. I also applied a higher quality skin texture to all three characters, along with some better makeup.

One last render and into Pixelmator for a little smoke in the fireplace and a slight vignette.
