I’ve pretty much tried the entire Johnnie Walker line. (With the exception of the hard-to-find Swing, and the recently discontinued Green label.) I just got back from
a week in Florida where I spent a lot of time hanging out with family and knocking back an entire 1.75L bottle of Johnnie Walker Red.
My aunt and uncle from Scotland were also with us. One night after the kids had all gone to bed, and the chips, dip, and alcohol came out, we got to talking about how I’ve started drinking whisky. My aunt works for DIAGEO, so she had more than a few pointers for me, as well as list of whiskies to seek out.
My local liquor store only had 3 of her top picks, two of which were about $70 bucks. They did, however, have a 12-year Glenfiddich. (Which also happens to be one of my Dad’s favorites too.)
Everyone says that single malts are better than the blends, so I really wanted to start trying them. For $50 bucks, I figured I’d try the Glenfiddich.
It’s such a cool bottle. It’s not round; it has three sides.
Ooh, fancy! It has a cork instead of a screw top.
I has such a nice color. It’s lighter than some of the Johnnie Walkers I’ve had.
It smells soooo good! It’s like wood. There is a hint of sweetness. They say it’s supposed to be pears, but I taste more peaches than anything. It is really woody though, which I like. It’s very clean and not harsh at all. Very smooth. Even my wife, who doesn’t like whisky at all, said it was very clean tasting. She doesn’t like Johnnie Walker at all. She says that there’s too many flavors; says theres too much gong on, and that it burns when you swallow it. So for her to say that the Glenfiddich is clean and smooth, you know it’s good.
If this is any indication of how good single malts are, then I’m not disappointed. Considering that this too was one of the cheaper ones on the list, I’m almost positive I’m not going to be disappointed with my aunt’s list.
