I admit it: I'm a total geek. I love electronics, programming, 3D printing, 3D art, and vintage Apple hardware. I'm always juggling half a dozen projects. I also enjoy documenting it all: my successes, my failures, my experiences... and everything geeky along the way.

HP Omen Fan Replacement

It's coming up on two years since I bought my kids their 17" HP Omen gaming laptops. They've been rocking these things pretty hardcore with the games and the fan on one of them is paying the price. It sounds horrible and is definitely on the way out.

Before New Fan

That's the laptop just idling. When he's rocking 60fps, this thing sounds like a bolt in a blender.

I opened up the laptop hoping it was just a matter of the fan being all jammed up with dust and cat hair. Unfortunately, the fan looks spotless. The bearings must be worn out. I hopped on eBay and tracked down a new genuine HP service part replacement. +1 for HP labeling all the parts inside with a service part number.

$32 bucks later I had a new fan in-hand. I can't believe a fan costs $32 bucks!

Swapping the fan out was literally a five minute job. It look longer to pop the back of the case off. The fan is held in with 3 screws.

Surprisingly, it was really clean underneath. I can't say the same for the outside of the laptop. Why can't kids wash their hands?!

Before buttoning the whole thing back up, I popped the battery back in and powered it on just to make sure it worked.

Nice. Very quiet.

Installed Fan

I then put the laptop back together and we were good to go.

After New Fan

I wonder how long it'll be before I have to fix the other two laptops?
