I started this rubber band ball a good 15 years ago. Maybe even longer. I know it was in the early to mid 90s. It could even be as close as 20 years old.
I just moved, so I was going through some old boxes looking for crap to toss. I came across my old rubber band ball. At last count, I think I stopped at 2,000. I forgot I even had this thing. It’s been put away for so long. I was going to toss it, but after seeing it again, I just couldn’t bring myself to do it.
I figured that I’d take it to work, as it would make a nice cube decoration.
It’s was in my cube for about a week when I suddenly got the urge to add more rubber bands to it. I ran out to Staples on my lunch break and picked up a few bas of rubber bands.
The smaller bag are colored. They’re also different sizes, so some of the smaller bands aren’t going to fit. The other bag was perfect though.
Here’s what it looked like after I added about 400 rubber bands. That’s about 100 beige over 300 colored. You can’t even see the colored ones underneath anymore. Go colored-beige-colored-beige, etc. That’s a good way to make sure you’re putting them on evenly. After all, its a rubber band “ball”, not a rubber band “oval”!
Some were too small, so I had to start a new one. It has about 300 rubber bands, and is solid and hard enough to be considered a weapon.
I used up both bags, and here’s what it looks like after adding 1150. I think all together it’s about 3,150 now. I do try to keep track.
I wish I did a better job of taking the before and after shots. The perspective is a little off. I don’t know if you can get a good sense of how “thick” 1150 rubber bands are, but you can tell.
It’s heavy! And yes, it’s got some serious bounce!
