I admit it: I'm a total geek. I love electronics, programming, 3D printing, 3D art, and vintage Apple hardware. I'm always juggling half a dozen projects. I also enjoy documenting it all: my successes, my failures, my experiences... and everything geeky along the way.

Geek Extraordinaire. Yeh, I said it.

Seiko 5 - SNK809

My wife purchased me a nice Hamilton Khaki Field Automatic 14 years ago, but one day it just stopped working. I suspect that the mainspring broke. I never got around to fixing it. I've been wearing a watch for as long as I can remember. I have pictures of me as a little kid wearing a watch. I'm pretty sure the first watch I received was from my aunt when I was in second grade. I had many watches growing up, but they have all managed to disappear over the years. I wish I still had them.

Ever since the Hamilton broke, I haven't been wearing a watch. My old beaten up Timex watches have been discarded over the years. I wish I kept them regardless of their condition. My wife recently treated me to a brand new Hamilton Khaki Field Automatic. So basically all I can think about now is watches. I really want to get back into watches.

I've been watching a lot of reviews online lately. One that really stuck out was the Seiko SNK809. It has to be the cheapest automatic you can buy. The sticker price is $195, but no one charges that. You can get it for as little as $65 bucks on Amazon. So that's what I did.

I picked up an SNK809.

I can't believe how much watch you get for $65 bucks. I think this is the first watch I've had that has both a day and date complication.

Seiko has never been known for their straps. I think they give you a strap because they have to. As amazing and high quality as their watches are, their straps are usually pretty crappy. Personally, I prefer that they put all the money into the watch and let me pick out a higher quality 3rd party strap.

I love an exhibition case back. So cool! I can't believe you get a see-through back on a $65 dollar watch. It would have been cool if they dressed it up a bit, but again, what do you want for $65 bucks?

I never even tried it on. I knew that black strap was junk, and it feels very coarse and scratchy. I put an 18mm gray Barton NATO strap in the cart along with the watch because I knew the stock strap was coming off right away.

I think the gray strap looks so much better, and really complements the case finish. What a sweet little everyday watch. This makes watch #5, I think I've officially been bitten by the bug!
