I took a six month break from working on the figurine because I was waiting for the ELEGOO Saturn resin 3D printer to hit the market. Since I needed a resin printer to print the armor, I really couldn't move forward without one. Unfortunately, that printer turned out to be way more expensive than I though it was going to be. The Mars 2 Pro is half the price, so I ended up buying that instead. I guess I should have done a little more research on what the final price of the Saturn was going to be. I would have saved myself months of stagnation.
In any case, it's time to start printing in resin!
The first test print that I did for the breastplates came out amazing. I immediately cued up all the parts and spent a weekend printing them all.
Breast plate:
Hip guard:
Pauldrons:
I did a lousy job of rinsing these off so when I cured them they came out a little ashy. I'll have to do a better job of scrubbing the parts clean next time. Not that it really matters. They are getting painted anyway.
Bracers:
Finally, the belt.
I'm going to hold off on printing the headdress until I can get the right wig for the figurine. I'll have to properly size the headdress to fit over the hair. I'll probably print a test piece in PLA to make sure the size is correct. Once I have it scaled appropriately, I'll print it in resin.
Time to start painting! I gave all the parts two coats of primer and then buffed them with steel wool.
I then gave them two coats of black and then a gloss finish.
I then buffed them with some graphite and protected them with a flat clear coat.
I then gave them some weathering with some acrylics. They came out amazing.
For the belt, I painted it with some acrylics and gave it a subtle weathering.
With the armor complete, it was time to make the leather straps to hold them on. I didn't want to risk damaging the finish, so I prototyped the straps with the old PLA parts that I printed.
Since this figure is basically the same size as
the last one that I made, I was able to recycle the file that I used to make the harness last time. I just had to make a few small tweaks.
Once I had the straps for the pauldrons and the bracers prototyped, I got to work on redoing all the chains with a finer 2mm black chain.
I then laser cut the straps out of thick red leather and installed the hardware.
After a test fit to determine the strap locations, I glued them into place.
That looks awesome.
I then added the chains to the belt.
The last thing to do was to laser cut the leather straps for the harness and glue the pauldrons on.
I am really pleased with the results so far. I want this figurine to be better than the last one. So far I think it's really shaping up to be a vast improvement.
Next up, shoes!
